Orbera Gastric Balloon Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon is a non-surgical and temporary weight loss device. A smooth, soft saline-filled balloon (about the size of a grapefruit) is placed in your stomach, allowing you to control your portion sizes by filling the space in your stomach. By following professional health and wellness advice, you can adopt good healthy eating habits and change your lifestyle so you can lose weight quickly and keep it off long term.

How long can I keep the Orbera balloon in my stomach?

The Orbera balloon is approved by the FDA to be placed in the stomach for 6 months. After 6 months, the balloon is removed endoscopically. This ensures optimal weight loss results while ensuring safety and avoiding any gastric balloon side effects.

How much weight can I lose with the Orbera balloon?

With the Orbera balloon, you will lose weight fast; with most weight loss occurring in the first 3-4 months. It is important for you to understand that the balloon is a tool to aid weight loss and must be used in conjunction with diet, exercise, and a behavior modification program. The amount of weight you lose and maintain will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt long-term lifestyle changes. Clinical studies have shown that people lose an average of 13% of their body weight at 6 months. On average, patients lost 3 x the weight of those who were on a diet and exercise program alone.

To qualify for Orbera, you must be an adult, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40, and be willing to participate in a medically supervised program.
